Ironically, no two outfits were alike – except every two that were, of course. He reissued a Gucci equestrian bag from 1981, he printed the Warner Brothers film characters the Gremlins across a pair of duchesse satin evening dresses, he used the phrase ‘Fuori!!!’, an acronym for Fronte Unitario Omosessuale Rivoluzionario Italiano (Revolutionary Homosexual Unitary Front) and also Italian for ‘out’.

The show, of course, presented Michele’s other obsessions, his magpie eye roaming through popular culture, science texts, philosophy and political activism, and Gucci’s own archives. The latest campaign lensed by David Sims stars Vittoria Ceretti, Aboubakar Konte, and Brando Erba against a distinctive green backdrop, echoing the women’s fashion show runway where the series of looks first debuted. Then in a tender finale, each of the 68 pairs of twins that modelled the show came out for a second run, holding hands this time. And as she solely intoned such odd lines as declaring herself “a second scoop … on the ice cream cone,” Gucci raised that wall of photographs and revealed to bemused audiences either side that an utterly identical show had been taking place for each of them. Faithfull’s rendition, however, made it seem like a piece of beat poetry.

Far more than the audience realised: truth be told, we should have put two and two together sooner (no pun). For the finale, the twins emerged from opposite sides of the set, stretched their arms across the runway, and joined hands: Alike, but not alike, as Marianne Faithfull intoned on the soundtrack.Michele’s latest show – as its name suggests – was an ode to twins. Then the wall of photos lifted, revealing another set of bleachers and another set of models wearing identical looks. The Gucci creative director played up the intrigue here, dividing the audience in two via a partition lined floor to ceiling with portraits of twins and look-alikes by Mark Peckmezian and staging two simultaneous shows without either half understanding until the last models made their way down the runway. There’s something captivating, even uncanny, about twins-we’ve all seen the photo of Michele and his friend Jared Leto, tuxedoed doppelgängers at the 2022 Met Gala. Mum Eralda and Mum Giuliana “shared a genetic solidarity but, above all, they shared an intimacy which was inaccessible to others.” “I am the son of two mothers,” the show notes began. Michele, it turns out, is the child of an identical twin.
